Newsletter #1 – Pandemic information to support rapid response

This is the PAIR Newsletter #1 to inform about updates and preliminary results since the project has started.

Dear Reader,

Welcome to the PAIR project.
We are glad to share with you the first updates since PAIR has kicked-off.

This newsletter will provide you with the latest outcomes, results and news concerning research on RNA respiratory viruses and new technologies for pandemic preparedness.

PAIR in a nutshell…

PAIR is an EU project to develop rapid and reliable detection methods for respiratory RNA viruses and foster pandemic preparedness thanks to two ambitious and interactive technologies: PANPOC and PANRISK.
PANPOC will be a reliable and fluorescence-based Point-of-Care instrument for ultra-rapid diagnosis.
PANRISK will be an accurate and reliable platform for epidemiologic prediction and prevention.

PAIR HIGHLIGHTS:
  • the PANPOC group realised the first 3D prototype of PANPOC. The prototype was developed by combining the consortium’s knowledge of the Loop-mediated isothermal Amplification (LAMP) technology – a powerful technique used for amplifying nucleic acids – with the commercial partners’ experience in the production of diagnostic devices in a quality-controlled environment. This technology operates at a constant temperature which makes the process simpler and more cost-effective, especially for field applications.
  • the PANRISK group has focused on assembling the team to conduct the research behind the model framework. Since the start of the project, the PANRISK group has been actively engaged in discussions on how to structure the model framework, define the underlying database, and determine which data sources to include. At present, the model will most likely use a point-process model framework for predicting the risk of outbreaks.
  • the communication and dissemination strategy has been outlined, the website and social media launched, and the communication kit delivered.
  • the first steps to assess the social impact of pandemic preparedness have been set.
