WHO Adopts Historic Pandemic Agreement
The WHO agreement reinforces the importance of coordinated international action and is a strong signal for our work in the PAIR project.
As part of PAIR’s endeavours to strengthen science-driven pandemic preparedness and response, we welcome the historic decision taken by the World Health Organization (WHO) during the 77th World Health Assembly: the adoption of a global pandemic agreement aimed at making the world safer in the face of future health emergencies.
This legally binding accord, endorsed by 124 WHO member states, outlines a comprehensive framework to enhance international collaboration in preventing and responding to pandemics.
Importantly for our work as a project, the agreement also introduces clearer mechanisms for data sharing, coordinated response strategies, and capacity-building initiatives. These elements not only validate the direction we are pursuing but also provide a stronger policy and institutional foundation for the work ahead.
This agreement, that will enter into force once ratified by 60 countries, gives more impetus to our aim as a project team: to develop tools for the detection of respiratory RNA viruses with pandemic potential in human, animal, and environmental samples, and to monitor pandemic risk in order to raise timely alerts when necessary. By promoting a coordinated, equitable, and genomics-informed approach to surveillance and response, the agreement aligns closely with the European One Health vision that underpins the PAIR project.
We see this as both a validation of PAIR work and a powerful call to continue building bridges across sectors and borders, which contributes to a more resilient and fair global health ecosystem.
